Comment:

I have a gateway solo 2150 laptop. I bought this as a used item 6 weeks ago. Its specifications are;

-p3 750 (The cpu have probably been replaced, because original specifications does not include p3 750 cpu)
-160 ram (original ram is 32)
-14.1" screen
-Ati Rage Mobility 4 MB
-15 GB Hitachi 2.5" HD
-Xircom credit card ethernet 10/100(I installed it about 4 weeks ago)

In first couple of weeks everthing was fine. But I have been getting blue screens for about one month. The interesting point is that I get almost all kinds of blue screens (I don't remember error names but there were 5 or 6 different error messages). It is also independent of which application is running. It crashes when I watch a video clip or surf internet or use MS office applications. It crashes almost everday(sometimes up to three times in the day). Can anyone guess what causes these blue screens. It looks like a software problem because it started to happen after two weeks of usage. But, I also started to use my laptop(sometimes) in a warmer room after two weeks of usage. And It looks like I get more blue screen when I use the laptop in the warmer room. Blue screens may also be caused by the ethernet adapter I installed.

This is a very uncomfortable situation because as a computer science graduate student, I need to use my computer a lot and It my crash any time while using It.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated

Computer Science Grad Student? Maybe you should change majors.

Isolate the problem. Remove the nic and its driver to see if the problem goes away.

If they persist then look closer at the messages. There might be a commonality.

If it is a heat related problem, which happens with laptops, then test it in a cooler environment or use the stepdown features of the processor and run it at a slower speed to use less power. Less power means less heat.

If all else fails then format and reinstall.

This is my first laptop computer. I have been using desktop computers before and I have solved all my problems myself. I have been using win2000 for 3 years at my desktop computer and have not got any blue screen at all. Also the desktop computers I had was new computers. But, the laptop is a used computer and I know nothing about its past(bought from e-bay). May be the one that sold me the laptop overclocked the cpu or installed a low quality ram. I can change the installed 128 MB ram but I am very busy and don't have time to make such a change. My knowledge from desktop computers do not apply (in terms of hardware) to laptop computers and I thought that It would be meaningful to consult other people before making any changes. Also I am in the middle of a project and do not want to reinstall windows now. And I want to know whether I can solve the problem without replacing a hardware or reinstalling windows

2 things if you made a hardware change or added something then the problem started remove it. Second I've read a lot of complaints abour SP 3 haven't experinced them for my self. But a lot of problems have been posted on this board and a lot include SP 3.
