It took me awhile to narrow this down, when I defrag and reboot I get the nice black screen with blinking cursor. I have tried every repair I know of to try boot but nothing I have to install windows 2000 in a separte folder to boot again. A little fuzzy on exactly what happens... if you do a defrag, then reboot, the system won't boot? And you cannot get back into the system again? Have you run a Scandisk on the drive? Are you running an antivirus program? Try removing it and testing the defrag/reboot issue (sometimes the antivirus programs get corrupted and cause problems upon sartup). Have you tried rebuilding the Master Boot Record? Can you get in in Safe Mode. Just some ideas, might try starting a new post with a little clearer idea of what you do when you defrag and reboot and what happens after that....

I tried not installing an anti virus or firewall wasnt that. I didnt think of it till lastnight but I also run the disk cleanup tool bbefore defrag. The screen is post boot, before the options of F8 to choose to safe boot, just a black screen with blinking cursor. I have tried the 4 boot disk you make that didnt even load up, and the emergancy repair disk sux lol. The only other thing I have thought of is going with a 3rd party defragger. Windows 2000 is so stable its a shame my booting is giving me this much trouble. Wifey is in school and uses computer regular lol I have atleast taught her to back files up.
