Comment: Hi! Guys, I am looking forward to buy a laptop. We r running Novell 3.12 on network but in few months we are gonna get a new server with WIN 2000 server on it and get rid of Novell 3.12 We use a DOS based databse application(Macola), another windows application(Telemagic if anyone is aware of it) of the network and few word, excel files. Please suggest the best configuration for a laptop to cover the above requirements. Or can suggest any vendor with model number and stuff. With so many products, vendors, models in market its difficult to choose from. Any experienced guys please suggest me. Thanx a lot in advance. Cyrus.

Reply: (edit)I would go with an IBM Thinkpad T23 equipped with Windows 2000. The Thinkpad series is very stable and will rarely crap out on you. BC

Reply: (edit)DOS based apps, database or otherwise, will not run correctly on the NT based OS's(NT,2K,XP). Be sure to take that into consideration before deciding on an OS.

Reply: (edit)My 2 cents worth... DOS apps MIGHT be a problem on W2K...we have several DOS apps that run ok on W2K, but it might be a problem for your specific situation... Take a laptop, any laptop, install W2K and see how it works with your DOS apps, then decide... If you have problems, then I would use W98SE...DO NOT TRY XP...just too many problems in general without trying to run DOS on it... As far as laptops go, we like IBM, then Toshiba... I don;t think Compaqs are very well made, kinda cheesy...haven't worked with HP laptops enough to have any comments... Now I have worked on a number of Gatway laptops...lot's of people say they are real cheaply made and lots of problems...I have not found that to be necessairly true...but what I do like about the Gateways, is their "restore CD"...it's great to work with, easy to use when you do need to restore a Gateway laptop... good luck Steve

Reply: (edit)I don't agree that XP has more problems than 2000. I've had many more problems with 2000 mainly because of its piss-poor recovery options (no scanreg, no msconfig, no DOS, no system recovery, in short the only things that were good about 9x and ME they took out of 2000). XP is full of baggage but it's much easier to recover from problems with it thanks to the recovery feature.
