Hi, I am running a personal PC that was perfectly stable until I made one alteration.

It is a PIII, 600MHz, pretty standard, network card, SB Audigy, USB ADSL modem, TV card (not working), Nvidia graphics card.

I had 128 (2x64) MB RAM in there, which I replaced with 2x256 MB, totaling 512 MB.

Unfortunately one of the 256 MB slots they gave me had ECC or something and was wrong, causing the PC not to boot at all. So I took it out.

Now the problem started. I had 2 x 64 MB and 1 x 256 MB (odd amount of memory, but who cares):

About twice a day, at random intervalls, my PC crashes and I get the following message: (still happens now that I have the correct 2nd 256 MB slot):

xxx stop: 0x0000001 (0xFF554000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xEB566F2D)

Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

xxx address EB566F2D base at EB560000, Datestamp 2bbac7el - alcan5wn.sys

Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk: 1-...

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me. Is it the RAM or something else?

Thanks in advance.
EH

The message you are getting is because of driver errors. The screen you are seeing is like the old blue screens on win 98/95. What happens is after a crash the computer dumps the physical memory into a log file with the .dmp extension. This log file can be used to determine what the cause of the crash is. Windows NT/2000 installs default to dump the memory into the log file and then automaticaly reboot the system. This option can be taken off in the system settings in the control panel on the last tab. (i cant recall what its labeled.) I would suggest that you look at the log file and try to determine what is causing the memory dump before you turn the option off first so that the problem can be resolved first. If you dont then your computer will just crash instead of giving you the memory dump error. Most cases it is because of a corrupt driver or program error. Either way its because of something other than your memory chips so dont worry your ram isnt bad.

Same problem, almos same configuration of the system. could it be the audigy drivers or the tv drivers? i am wondering what driver it is most likely to be.

alcan5wn.sys is alcatel speedtouch USB modem.

do a search on "alcan5wn.sys" and you'll find you are not the only one with the problem.
There is a new set of drivers (ver 1.6) for the modem which are more stable, but they drop connection after 15 min. Someone suggested taking only the alcan5wn.sys from version 1.6 and overwritingthe old one. Seems succesful.Am currently looking for those drivers.
