Comment: Greetings... Something is very wrong with my Windows 2000. When my computer boots, it goes through the BIOS and everything else, giving me the single beep to confirm the POST was passed successfully. Then, when Windows 2000 begins to load, everything appears normal, except when it gets to the point right before the logon screen pops up. At this point, I hear two very short beeps of the same pitch from my PC speaker, which never happened before until this morning. When I press "OK" to confirm my logon name, as Windows begins to load, it goes much slower than usual, and when it is finally loaded; I am unable to perform certain operations. For example, my MSN Messenger does not load; nor can I start it from the Start menu (when I try, nothing happens). I am unable to view Control Panel correctly; the window pops up, but then all the icons are in a very small space on the left hand side, and the scroll bar is pushed over too. When I try to access "Add/Remove Programs", it brings up the window, but there is nothing inside, just a blank white screen, and all there is is the Close button which actually says "Cl&ose", and the button doesn't even work, I have to close the window via the "X" at the top-right. In Internet Explorer, the "Find" (Ctrl+F) does not work (when I press Ctrl+F, simply nothing happens). This is all very odd, and I'm sure there are many other inconsistencies that I haven't found yet; these are just a few examples. Any and all help would be much appreciated. Again, since the beeps came from the PC speaker as opposed to my "actual" speakers, I'm not sure if this is actually a software (Windows 2000) problem or a problem with my hardware. Thanks for your time in reading my query. Billy Mahabir

Reply: (edit)Billy; Usually, two short beeps deals with memory. I've never seen a system boot up and *then* beep, but if you haven't tried it yet, you might try re-seating the memory modules. If you still get the same beep message, try taking out (if you have more than one module) one at a time and see if you get the same message. You mentioned that it beeped once to signal passing the POST, but is it possible that the single beep was instead another message signifying System RAM refresh failure? You did't mention trying anything as of yet, so if you haven't investigated this yet, it might be worth a try.

Reply: (edit)Hi, what I would do. When windows starts loading and says win 2000 press and hold F5 untill your PC says working in the safe mode. The scren will be kind weird it won't load all of your drivers, this is if you have any viruses and you will be able to configurate some of your problems. The other thing I would is follow: if you don't have any very important info just reformat your C: disk here are some instructions: #1 stick you win 2000 cd in your CD-rom #2 restart your computer and then follow all the instructions that cd tells you.
