Well, I posted this the other day and the people that responded said to use the built-in W2K backup software, well.... the only problem is that the built-in stuff does NOT back up open files. So I can't get a full backup.
So....
I have a W2K file server where all my users store their files and profiles and such, and I would like to find a decent software package that will just back up the server to it's connected tape drive. I don't need to back up the client machines because the users all store their data on the server, so nothing overly fancy (has to back up open files).
I'd also like to be able to have it automatically eject the tape after it's done running (has to have a scheduler of course).Anyone got any good suggestions for this? What ones work or don't work?
Thanks again!

Depends how much you want to spend. Backup Exec will do all the things you want but doesn't come cheap. I'm guess at least $700 or so if you add the Open File Option.

Oh, so now it's open files that need to be backed up. Like Glen said, the only one I know of is Back-up Exec w/ open file option. Not cheap or easy to use and crashes alot, (at least it did with me, which is why I no longer use it).

Perhaps I'm missing the point of scheduling backups entirely but it seems to me you could schedule the backup to occur at night when no users are on and have open files....
If you're required by the bossman to be there 'Johnny on the spot' for backups then consider coming in a little earlier or staying a little later and again, do the backups after all users are logged off the network and all their files closed.

I'll be scheduling it for late at night, but if a user forgets to log off their machine, then some of their files may stay open, thus they won't get backed up (not to mention system files). And I realy don't want to miss out on backing up one of my boss's files and have them screaming later on.
Thanks for the info guys!
I'll look into Backup Exec unless anyone else chimes in with pros and cons.

I use connected for remote backups on the web. $14 a month for all you can backup from one machine. It only backs up changed files, you can schedule at night and you can recover old versions. www.connected.com
I use it about once a month to recover old versions of files--works great...

I have the same problem with users leaving the pc on and with open files, I tell em too bad. If you leave it on and open and the power blinks in the middle of the night, goodbye data. A few have learned and now save and close anything of importance, the rest, well too bad.
Part of an admin's job is to educate users, leaving that spread sheet of new payroll open and un-saved the night before the meeting with the vp is, well stupid.
