Backup drive need an OS?

OS: 2000 xp
CPU/Ram: 256
Comment:

I just bought a 10 Gig hard drive to backup my files from XP and 2000 hard drives (2 hard drives-dual boot).

Do I need to load an operating system on that 10 Gig hard drive to be able to use it as backup or just formatting it as ntfs will do? This is making me think... :-)

If I need to load an OS which in this case will be 98SE (less space for windows files), would I have problems with my dual boot of XP Home and 2000. XP home and 2000 are in Primary IDE.

My 2 questions again.

1. Do I need to load an OS in that drive or formatting will do?

2. If I load 98 would I have any problems with my dual boot of XP home and 2000? XP home and 2000 are in primary IDE and I can use the secondary IDE.

Thanks in advance.

Let me not confuse you, 3 drives total my computer will have. One has XP home, the other 2000 and the other 10gigs don't know what to do.

Thank you for your response. Does it need to be formatted then? What does the drive need?

A drive must be formatted with some sort of file system for you to be able to store files on it.

In your case I would recommend NOT ntfs but fat32 which can be accessed from 98 and a boot diskette if need be.

Might I suggest that you remove the 10gb after backing up your files and save on the shelf and don't leave in the computer. 10gb drives are rather old, and you don't want it to die from use.

Just because a drive is old doesn't mean you should quit using it. All drives should be backed up regularly. I have a 540MB still in service and just recently pulled a 120MB that still runs fine. I personally think the older drives were made better. They seemed to last longer. The first drive I ever had fail was a 20GB IBM. 10GBs is still a decent amount of space. If nothing else jm could could use it for a Ghost image.

OtheHill: I only said that because with today's hard drives there is no sense using up a 3rd IDE channel with a 10gb hard drive. I'm still using a few 2.3 & 4.3GB SCSI drives that never seem to die. To me having more than two IDE HD's is a waste unless a promise card is installed. Also I backup NT/W2K/XP/Suse/Mandrake/Fedora on spare scsi hard drives with Drive Image. And remove from the system so I don't have to make them "hidden" (which can be a problem). Plus he said he just bought the 10GB drive----condition?? But anyone can take my ideas with a grain of salt!
