Automatic updates greyed out

Comment:
My automatic updates reboots my machine 10am every day after finishing the update install. Problem is that the automatic updates box is greyed out so I can't make changes. I am on a network but I'm the administrator, I've logged onto my machine as admin and domain admin but still can't get into it. Any ideas? Could I install/re-install? Thanks

Hi Paul
Do you mean the Control Panel icon for Automatic Updates is greyed out ?
What about in Services...what is Automatic Updates set to ? Automatic or Manual ?
You could try going to Add\Remove Programs and see if you can uninstall and then reinstall Automatic Updates, after ensuring Automatic is chosen in the Services.
Good luck Krystyna

Thanks for your help. No the icon is not greyed out but the box that comes up when it's clicked on. There is nowere in add remove programes were it can be uninstalled, not even add/remove windows components. Yes I can stop it in services but what I really need to do is change the settings. Any ideas?

Hi Paul
By default, W2k hides a lot of the items available from Add\Remove Windows Components. You can edit the file that hides them, and then have access to uninstall and reinstall.
Go to C:\WINNT\INF\SYSOC.INF Open the sysoc.inf file in Notepad
DELETE "HIDE" AT THE END OF EACH LINE UNDER "COMPONENTS"
