i have domain named as prod.w2k.com.

i wanted to restore a user named amit s which was in mfg ou.

I made a Non autho restore and then Autho restore using ntdsutil.

restore subtree cn=amit s,ou=mfg,dc=w2k,dc=com

i got an error as illegal syntax ,alongwith the error could not find DN=amit s

i tried with

restore subtree "cn=amit s,ou=mfg,dc=w2k,dc=com"

but still the same error.

any answ....

Really now, can a user name, such as "amit s" have a space in it????

amit s mrepresents first name and last name and its not a user login id.User id is amit.

In ldap convention we have to mention first name and last name .If both r mentioned ,then it should be quotes " ". okkkkk

PRoblem Solved

I got the correct syntax

restore subtree "cn=amit s.,ou=mfg,dc=w2k,dc=com"

Note "amit s." where s is the middle name ,if there was a last name say p ,then it would have been

"amit .s p,"

Hope this helps everyone.
I used adsiedit utilty to get the correct ldap path.
