Can anyone help here? I work for a small company that has just bought a new server (Win 2k Server) to replace the peer to peer network that is already in place but is starting to struggle.

We have a combination of Win 95, Win 98 and Win XP (Pro and Home) PCs that have been bought throughout the years as and when required. The XP Pro machines have logged onto the server without any problem, but I am having real problems getting my PC to logon.

I have had a look through previous questions to see if anyone else had anything similar and tried everything that seemed obvious. I have ensured that the user name is on the Server, but when I try to logon I get the following message "Domain Password you supplied is not correct, or access to your server has been denied".

I know that the password is correct, so why am I being denied access? A few pointers would be great.

Regards

Andrew

The first thing is to try one of your working machines (like the XP clients) to log on with the username and password that is being rejected in your Win98 machine. If it doesn't log on either, then it's an authentication problem. I'd suggest deleting and adding the user again in the Win2K server.

I've tried doing that too. As I'm only setting it up at the moment I only have the one user account setup. That user name has already been set up locally on each of the PCs prior to attaching to the server.

The access is being denied for another reason, but it isn't the password.

Just on the surface, there's two quick aspects to login that are common pitfalls with windows 2000 server and mixed 9x, NT 4 workstation, 2000 Pro, XP clients.

With Windows 2000 server, I presume it's is in an active directory role. You have DNS implimented and (maybe DHCP, WINS, IIS, etc)

While Windows 2000 and XP are fine with DNS for Autehntication, windows 9x is not. You need Wins (which is touted to NOT be required for 2000 bases networks, true would it not be for legacy requirements)

Also, install the Active Directory 9x Client Extensions. The DNS and WINS IP of your workstations should be the 2000 server.
With Wins and Active Directory Client Extensions install you should be good to go form the NON win Pro, XP PCs/ Good Luck..
