Apacer USB flash drive doesn't work

The Apacer USB 2.0 flash drive should not require a driver for W2K. But when I plugged it in the first few times, it crashed the computer and corrupted up to 300 files. I tried removing the USB devices and getting Windows to redetect them. Then I got Error 28 (drivers not installed) for the USB device so I got the device manager to find one. It did so but then said "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance". I have tried everything I can think of with the device manager and hardware wizards, and I have even re-installed Service Pack 4. Anyone got any ideas?

You could try re/installing the drivers for your chipset? - eg the disk that came with your motherboard, or download some new drivers from your motherboard manufacturer's website.
Good luck - USB sticks are very handy IMO(when they dont corrupt your OS anyway!)

I have the same problem with two different brands of usb plug-in memory sticks. I found an article on another website that said that the problem is related to WIN2000pro Service Pack 4, which corrolates to the start of my problem.
Have you found the answer yet?

Yes, I found the answer. The driver is usbstor.sys. My version was 5.0.2183.1 dated 14.11.99 and I have updated it to ver 5.0.2195.6655 dated 10.6.03. Aged aunts should of course know these things. Plug and er... play? Hah!
