Hello chaps!
Do any of you know any tips or tricks to get
win 2k to runn faster and more stabley on old
machines?
Cheers!Never argue with the fellow that packs your parachute

In my experience, cpu speed has no effect on stability using Win2K. At least down to a Pentium 166/mmx, which is the slowest machine I've configured it on. A properly functioning and correctly configured rig is required regardless of cpu/memory/hd speed.
That being said, more memory and a faster hard drive will work wonders on older machines. Going to 512meg+ of memory and replacing a 5200/5400 rpm drive with a 7200rpm one will make it look like a different machine.A lot is dependent on the Bios and whether it can handle more memory and larger hard drives. If it won't handle the newer devices and can't be upgraded it's time to say Adios and just replace the mainboard/cpu or relegate it to backup, firewall, kids room status.
There are other tweaks that can be done to the OS itself but without speeding up the hardware you won't see much of an increase with that alone. Do a Google search for "tweaking windows 2000" and you'll find numerous guides outlining Win2k tweaks.
Good Luck,

yes upgrade that piece of junk to a normal computer. This one can be used as server/router/exchange server nothing more

Never put win2K on anything slower than 450 PIII/PII (hard to handle the CPU load) and less than 128 Mb RAM (upgr. to 192 from 128 made wonders on my prev. PIII 733 machine, even with 5400 RPM hdd staying)
***************Just for laughs*************
PII 300 MHz + 3X128 Mb RAM + WINXP Pro =
**********6.5 min startup time!!!**********
(Not mine at least, i got PIII 1.0 Gig, overclocked to 1050MHz, 512 RAM, Win2K, and it runs UT 2003 very well)
