If I upgrade to 128bit encryption will it slow down my PC or have any other negative effect?

the only downsides are that its not available in some coutries and it gives some a false sense of security--picture a message being sent from one town to another --in the most locked down of armored cars--but no security at the dropoff or pickup and the route goes through many twists and turns where people are trying to hijack it

Well put!

People think that their information
is vulnerable during transit.
It is, but the chances that someone is capturing it and decrypitng it is
very small.

The biggest problems as fgds said is before you send it, and after it is received.
PC vulnerabilities, whether it be open ports,
a trojan back door or bug are usually
where information is comprimised.
