I know, I know, DUMB idea, but I didn't set it up this way, the previous IT guy did, and now I have to deal with it due to limited budget! Anyway, What is the best way to protect this server? you're not supposed to have NAVCE and NAV Exchange Filtering/Anti Virus on the same server from what I understand, so what would be the safest way to protect it? The Filtering/AV protects the email, but what about the rest of the server?

You can have NAVCE (Norton Anti Virus Corporate Edition 8.x) and Norton Antivirus Exchange Filtering on the same server.
The filtering is for SMTP in/out bound scanning. It does not do any scaning in realtime protection for the Exchange Server. [Keeping it short an Exchange Server shouldn't be a Active Directory domain contrller as a best pratice]. That aside they can run NAVCE and NAV SMTP/Exchange Filtering.
You Should NOT make the Server a Parent Server for additional Clients when you install NAVCE on the Exchange Server.
Install the NAV Exchange/SMTP filtering. Then either install NAVCE as a standalone Server (it's a parent in it's own group, with no Children, or nodes reporting to it)
Or Install NAVCE as a Un-Managed application. In this Mode there is NO parent server and it's just a NAVCE with the console for it's self.
I think you misundestood, that the NAVCE Should not be a Parent Server for children nodes on a Server that Also has Exchange AND Nav Smtp/Exchange filtering.
Mo Matter what you do make sure there is One realtime Scanner for the Server and One for Exchange/SMTP in/Out bound mail. Good Luck

Thanks very much for your help. I guess I did misunderstand....the previous IT "Manager" set up this server as a Domain Controller, the Exchange server, AND the only NAVCE Parent node with all clients reporting to it. Looks like I have some work to do!
