Hi,

I have a small network, where the server is win2k and one of the clients (running XP) is connected to a router and can access the internet.

How do I share this across the network? Internet sharing will not work since the server is a domain controller.

I'm new to this situation, and have tried google and searching this forum, but to no avail (well I got the network working which was a partial success).

Many thanks,
Antro.

1. configure the w2k server to supply dhcp. set the w2k server as the dns server. put your gateway as the ip of the lan side of the router. these are all dhcp workstation settings.
2. configure the w2k servers dns by putting the isp's dns ips in the forwarders tab.

reboot the pcs and they will have internet access

Are you ready for where Microsoft wants you to go today?

From the questions you ask it sounds like you are a beginner to networking. My own opinion is that it would be difficult for a beginner to setup a DHCP and/or DNS server as wanderer suggests.

You have a router. Most current routers (dsl or cable) have a built in hub, or switch, so more than one computer can be connected to it to use the Internet connection. If there isn't a built-in hub or switch, get one, they are relatively inexpensive.

If it is only two, or a "few" computers it would be much easier for the beginner to assign static IP address to each computer, within the network/subnet of the router and then make up a hosts file containing the hostnames and IP addresses of each computer and copy it to each computer.

The reason I did not suggest using the DHCP server function of the router, is that there is a chance that the dhcp server may assign a different IP address when the lease is renewed.

haroldw your suggestion will cause antro a world of hurt to domain logons. They will be extremely slow if at all.

antro if you don't know how to configure the domain controller I am sure the person who set it up does. contact them. Its a 1hr or less job.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

haroldw and wander,

Many thanks for your replies. I am new to networking, but there isn't any one here with any more knowledge than me! (there's no it support here at all, it was set up by some friends in the police force, but they can't help/support any more).

Wander, I game for a challenge, so I'll give your advice a go.

Thanks again! And wish me luck....
Antro.
