Subject: Allow win 98 users on peer to peer net to access shared drive
|
Comment: Hi, I've recently upgraded to w2k and none of the win98 computers on my peer to peer network can access my shared drive anymore, although I can access their's. It used to be password protected, but I've removed that and allowed EVERYONE (in shared permissions list) full access but to no avail. The problem seems to be that win 98 users are prompted for a password to access this resource \\myw2k\ipc$ . How on earth are they supposed to input their user name and password when there is no box for the user name and my shared drive (C:) is not password protected? Very puzzling indeedy. TIA Yong

Reply: (edit)Try opening the computer management console and adding them as new users on the win2k machine using the log-in names and passwords from the win98 machines. In Win2k, right click on my computer and choose "manage" from the middle of the menu, then open up local users and groups and right clcik on "users" and "add new user"

Reply: (edit)what the other gentleman has said is very true with windows 2000 you have to create accounts for them in order for other people to get access to your hard drive.

Reply: (edit)Yes, create accounts for them within the windos 2000 Machine. Now, since the Win98 machines are Peer to Peer, you either need Netbui or TCP/IP with a Static IP on the WIn98 machines. And you need to look at the Name that is defaulting to when the Win98 Mahines boot up. Since they don't prompt for a Login, they are using a DEFAULT login name, in some cases it is the name DEFAULT (for default user) you can SEE or change the Default name by clicking on Start, LOGOFF. Then you get a local Windows98 login prompt and Wha-La, there is the DEfault Login Name that MUST match in the Windows 2000 PC. Then create a Group or Add Rights to those Default Users and they will be able to access the windows 2000 shares...

Reply: (edit)If that doesn't work try considering your drive file format. If for example the drive that has Windows 2000 installed on it is NTFS format then there is no way that a Windows 98 system will be able to access anything on your system. To share resources between a Win2000 system and a Win98 system the Win2000 system can't be formatted NTFS. If this is your problem you will have to clear your drive the Windows 2000 is on and format it as FAT32 and reinstall Windows 2000.

Reply: (edit)i can back that up to, what the file format of the drive is has nothing to do with wether another computer can see it over a network. David check you answers before you give misleading information !!!!!!!

Reply: (edit)OK, I seem to have the same problem. I have included the users in my W2k machine and set the passwords as never needing to use but the '98 system keeps telling me that either my password is false or my rights have been disallowed (I'm reading a German PC so some of my terms may not be exact). I have added the same users in win '98 the same as they are added in w2k.....what am I doing wrong???? Anyway, Does RAS server have anything to do with this.

Reply: (edit)The above anwers helped me. I found th management console and added a user matching the one I had used on the Windows me <---! machine. This did not help. What did help, though, was to un-disable the existing Guest account. I can't help feeling that this might have made things wide open. Any comments anyone?

Reply: (edit)I am using one Win 2000 server and one Win 98 computer. The problem i having is that i could not network these computers.Neither of them can access each other.I checked all cable connection and everyhting is right.i used TCP/ip protocol in each computer. The other thing that surprised me is that if i entered the same Ip address in both computer the one with win 98 displays message saying that your ip conflicts with the other computer.i also used cross over cable with RJ45 jack. i would like to mention that i did networking among one win 200 server and two win 98 computer using router which is connected to the DSL modem. Everything worked just fine. Then i replace win 2000 server with my win 2000 server it did not work( it did not receive and send any packets) but my win 98 worked Please suggest me how this problem can be solved.
