Adding Win98 to a Win2K system

I know that there are many messages on this forum about adding Win2K to a Win98 system,
however I would like to ask your advise since I want to do it the other way and don't know where to begin!

I have a 44gb drive partitioned into 4 drives - CDEF. C is the primary bootable partition with Win2K on it. D stores my data, E is empty, and F is a dedicated Win2K OS for video editing.

I would like to add Win98 to the third partition - the E drive - and for it to be an option when I boot up, as my two Win2K operating systems are.

I guess I would need to use my Win98 boot disk to install Win98, and when asked, to specify partition E. However I am not sure if I will be asked where I want Win98 to be installed and therefore am worried I may end up overwriting my primary partition!

Likewise, what about boot.ini? If I do install to E, will I thn have to copy lines across to the C drive boo.ini file where my current boot-up sequence is located?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.....Casper

p.s. this is my c:\boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=4
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINNT="Video Editing System" /fastdetect

I have a dual-boot win98 and 2k system. Everything I've read says that win98 must be installed first so that win2k can detect it - that's important since win2k is the OS that controls which OS is loaded.

I had no trouble selecting the correct partition when loading, but I did it in the order I was told...Good luck!

Thanks Joe - I had my system setup like that before and then decided I no longer wanted Win98 since everything I wanted to do I was quite happy and able to do it in Win2K. However, I now want Win98 back, and I am pretty sure there has to be a way to do it without going the Win98 and then Win2K route. It may be more complicated, but if I know what I am doing and why I am doing it I think I may just be able to get there - so long as it has been done before and isn't TOOOO COMPLICATED!!!!!!

I think you can install win 98 over win2k, but you have to prepare an ERD diskette first for your win2k, so whenever you install win98 your win2k will disappear, you can use your ERD diskette after that to restore your win2k boot files.

As long as your C: partition (active Primary) = fat32 then you can go ahead, and put '98 where you want it. (But remember to make the ERD first; although you can recover access to W2K and establish the dual-boot without it...). 21665 (#5) as already refered above above should help you out?

If C: = ntfs then post back; things get a 'little' more involved...

I have had a look at 21665 but find it a little confusing - perhaps trvlr (if you have time) you could offer a little more advice? As I mentioned I have 4 partitions on a single drive:

C: Win2K (primary and bootable)
D: Personal Data
E: Spare
F: Win2K (dedicated to video editing)

If I start up with a Win98 boot disk will I be offered the choice of where to place Win98? In this case I want it to go to the third E (Spare) partition. From what I gather boot files will still be copied to the C: primary bootable Win2K partition, and these files will alter my boot sequence.

FYI all partitions on this drive are FAT32

Presuming Win98 gives me the option to load to E:, once all setup I need to run the ERD, so that I can "update" the new boot sequence in ordr for me to boot to both Win2K systems as well as the new Win98 one.

Fewww...Complicated stuff but I think I am getting there!! Oh, and all my data is backed up!

So...please let me know if I am right!! Thanks so much, casper...

Is there a way of how I can add a second hard disk with preloaded win2k to a system with one disk with win98 already existing?

Want to know if I can somehow configure the boot order manually. Any help would be highly appreciated!!
