I used n-lite to make a custom W2k boot CD. One of the tweak options was to remove the My Computer, and Network Neighborhood icons. HOWEVER, they now no longer show up in directory windows, and windows explorer either!

Sigh...I should have just stuck with the blank icons, and a space for a name to hide them!

Anything I can do to restore them without re-formatting?

Thanks,
Bill

Perhaps installing Tweak UI and enabling those icons will fix it. I'm not familiar with n-lite.

I actually tried TweakUI. It doesn't have an option to let you add/remove my computer, only network places. But even if you "remove" my network places, and then "add" it again, it still doesn't show up.. so I am assuming I'll need some sort of registry fix.

I am guessing since N-lite is meant for XP as well, it must be a bug that the app doesn't recognize what removing that icon in w2k will do to the OS, because in XP removing that icon has no consequences.

GOT it!

I searched google for a way of manually removing the My Documents folder through registry...since there are no guides for removing My Computer... because theres no good reason to do that!

In any event, it turns out that Network Places, and My Computer are adjacent to each other in the registry, so I was able to remove the "Hidden Value" from both of those as well. Voila!

For reference:

The My Documents shell key is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\ShellFolder
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.

Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: Attributes
Setting for Value Data: [Default = 0xf0400174 / Hidden = 0xf0500174]
Exit Registry and Reboot

In the CLSID folder there are 4 are other keys folders (2 of which were unrelated, and did not have an "Attributes" Key inside.)

The two that did have an Attributes key started with the number 2 instead of 4. I assumed they were Network Neighborhood, and My Computer, however after unhiding both simulatenously, I don't which is which, but I don't really care.
