I'm having a problem where a person on my network keeps getting locked out, but this is NOT a log in issue. She's working on the computer, everything is going just fine, and then all of a sudden her account is locked out. She's not trying to log on, she's not forgetting her password, and I'm pretty damn sure no one is attempting to log on as her. The only advice Microsoft has on this entire issue is that the person has incorrectly entered his or her password three times. Like I said, this is not the case here, and their advice tells me nothing about how to fix this problem. It's happening about once a day, and she's the only person it's happening to. Our server is running Windows 2000 server with all the latest and greatest patches/upgrades/service packs. Her workstation is running Windows 98. Any help anyone could offer would be great.

audit sucessful and failed logons, sounds like we got a "browser" also are you connected to the net through a perminant connection, if so, do you have some sort of firewall?

I found the solution to my problem, and everyone out there who thought it was a log in issue was absolutely flat wrong. So many people have posted on this site having this problem, NO ONE has posted an answer because everyone, including Microsoft, thinks it's a log in issue.

In case this happens to anyone else out there here is the correct answer.

1) Write down the name of the computer your user is working on at the time of lock out.

2) Check to make sure there is a computer account on the server for that computer.

3) If not, make one.

4) If there is, your problem is different than this one and I can't help you right now.

Windows 98 is natorious for having security holes, and was never the best operating system for networks, everyone knows this. The same problem you're asking about was happening on my network with a few uers, but one user in particular was getting locked out at least once a day, sometimes even more.

My situation involves a Windows 2000 server as the domain controller, and a user with a Windows 98 machine. Windows 98 will allow a user to sign onto the network even if that computer does not have an account on the server. Unfortunately there was a period of time here at my company where our network administrator was out for 6 months due to back surgery. Someone else, less qualified, took over for a while. This person was setting up people's computers without creating an account on the server for the computers. Windows NT won't even let you sign onto a machine if it hasn't been set up with an account, 98 doesn't care. I guess our server didn't like that these people were roaming our network on "rogue" machines and would lock out their accounts.

We've been dealing with this for about 3 years now. Just this year I took over as network administrator and I inharited these problems. Just last week I realized what the problem was, and since then I haven't received one call about a person getting locked out. Microsoft doesn't even know of a fix for this. As far as I know, I'm the first person to think of this. More than likely someone else knows this, but hasn't said anything to anyone. That is why I'm posting this reply, I dont' want anyone else out there to waste time and money on this stupid problem.
