It's strange! being unable to access the network yet being able to use the network for internet access!
Pinging results in the request timing out.

Anyone have a clue? This is certainly the only computer in a network of 50(or so) computers with this problem. It's actually one of few with 2000 installed.

What exactly is the problem. From reading your post, I think you're saying you have a lone 2000 PC that's unable to access the LAN but has internet access......is that correct?

Open a command prompt window on the offending PC and type the following command:

ipconfig /all

Then do the same on another client PC that is working properly and compare all settings. Only the IP address itself should differ. The Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS addresses should all be the same. If they're not, then that's most likely your issue. It sounds to me like your Subnet Mask may be incorrect on the one PC.

Check that and report back.

Also, you may want to try pinging the problem PC from another in the LAN.

Thankyou very much for your reply! =]

I tried these things. Firstly, the mask, gateway and DNS addresses are all the same. Then I pinged it from my computer and it timed out, which took about 7 seconds per attempt.

Edit: Yes, sorry for the vagueness, you were right in saying that is the problem.

Sounds like you have a software firewall installed and it is blocking traffic.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Need at least one common protocol on all machines.

I'd say it's a firewall issue, but it would help if the OP would post the results of the ipconfig.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

I'd have to agree on the firewall since DNS, SM and Gateway addresses all match.

Please forgive my ignorance... I was looking around at other problems, and it didn't really occur to me to use the search function on the site.

I recently attempted a Sophos upgrade, from 2.0 to 3.0. After which, there were a couple of issues, which I just (lazily) cured with changing the options to 'Allow all traffic'. Seems I didn't change the options for the firewall as well, and yeh, that's definetly what was blocking the access.

Thankyou people, you all have great hearts =]

Edit: Oh, wait ;] I did allow all traffic for firewall, it seems that particular computer didn't want to comply, or I missed an install detail =]
