Subject: access a remote monitor over a network |
Comment: Here's my situation. I have a fast computer in my bedroom and a slow one in the living room, and they are networked with each other using a DSL router. How can I play a movie with Windows Media Player on my faster computer but have it output to the monitor in my living room? I'm not interested in other methods that require buying additional cables or splitters or other hardware, nor do I want to just simply bring my fast CPU outside to the living room. In other words, is it possible, with or without special software, to access a remote monitor over a network?

Reply: (edit)Perhaps pcAnywhere? I'm not sure if you will get fullscreen playback from this however.

Reply: (edit)even if you have Pcanywhere it won't matter. The slow computer still has to process the information and output it to the monitor, so it will still be slow. I'm sorry, but if you want it to be coming from the fast computer, you'll have to run cabling from the fast computer to the monitor. Unforunately monitoring cable can't be like over 20 some feet before it loses display.

Reply: (edit)The problem with the PC Anywhere solution is that you have a limited number of frames transmitted due to network capacity problems that will be see on any network with the possible exception of a gig network (which you don't have). I know you don't want to buy extra hardware, but the best solution, depending on your needs requires it. You should evaluate the product referenced by this link to see if it could fit your needs. http://www.x10.com/products/x10_vk53a.htm
