I am trying to configure a PC as a Windows 2000 Server according the guidelines in a book on MCDBA exam 70-228. The paragraph reads "A computer with a NetBIOS name of SelfPacedCPU, configured as a domain controller in the SelfPacedSQL.MSFT domain".

I have installed WIn 2K Srv already and it is working just fine. When I try to install Active Directory and DNS I get 'The wizard cannot contact the DNS server that handles the name "selfpaced.msft" to determine if it supports dynamic update. Confirm your DNS configuration, or install and configure DNS server on this computer.'When I continue and install DNS I get "The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, wee Windows Help".

The PC is not (cannot go) on the compnay network. My question is: is it possible to install AA and configure DNS on a stand alone server?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Is your server on the network if so unplug the network cable and do the dcpromo command and tell me if you get the same problem.

The server is not on the network. Either way (Wizard or dcpromo) I get the same error. Any ideas why?

You can not run dcpromo if you are not connected to a network. Plug your cable into a hub and you should be able to complete it. It doesn't have to be on the company network but it has to be on a network. Think about it, what good is AD on a stand alone machine. Even if nothing else is plugged into the hub, your server must see a connection on the nic.

Thank you very much. If you are absolutely correct then our NT administrator shoould be fired, right? This is indeed a very big company by this country's standards.

Fired? Maybe not, but your NT administrator might want to stick with NT until or unless he understands Windows 2000 AD. They are night and day and if this company is large, you risk serious and expensive problems by having someone experiment with your AD deployment. It would be well worth the investment to hire a full time w2k administator or at least a qualified consultant to oversee the project.
