Subject: a win2000 pro can't connect to win2000
Comment:

i have a windows 2000 server with active directory installed and running with a domaine 'x'.
i have a win2000 pro that was localy configurated with workgroup , the server is connected to the hub through uplink and the win2000 pro is connected to hub too at one of the port ,
now my situation is this: i added a user in the 'X' domain with admin priviledges. now i went to win2000 pro and changed the name of workgroup to 'X ' similar to 'X' domain .
in my server i have a fixed 192.168.25.1 and also for the workstation an Ip @ 192.168.25.8 . anyhow i tried to connect to the domain 'X' by right click my computer /properties/network identification/properties and try to click option domain and entering 'X' as domain but it doesn't find the domain . after it ask me about my computer name and computer domain and then for a username and pssword. i try to put the admin user + password but can't log in. now the funny thing is when i ping the address of the server i get a reply , meaning my connection
but can't log to domain with any user even with administrator and password from 'X' domain.???? any suggestions

ok dude... first off they either both have to be members of a domain or they both have to members of a workgroup... in your case you should get on the win 2k server and right click on my computer got to properties then go to network identification.. then select workgroup and type in X just like the win 2k pro pc.... set up 2 ip's for them like you have i believe then make sure you have file and printer sharing enabled... then on your server cpu go to start settings control panel administrative tools then to computer management then to users then to the guest account (enable it and have no password.) do the same on the other pc.. you are good to go.. i would not suggest setting up a domain with just 2 cpus though.. for 2 pc's use the setup i jsut described to you it will suit you better..

Install DNS on Server system and make sure both systems are in the same subnet and provide DNS IP.

Try installing NetBEUI on both machines, reboot and then try and join the workstation to the domain.
If this doesn't work edit your host or lmhost files to let each one know the other is there.
