First, It's not:

A:/

it's a:\

Go to a command prompt and:

dir a:\

If this works, you may have an Explorer issue.

If not, make sure you have a known-good floppy disk. You may need to clean the drive.

does all this mean my floppy drive is broken down and i need a new one?

Hi Ying,

It may be the FDD going bad.

But check BIOS and see if it's set right.

Then reseat the cable.

As it boots, tap f8 and it should go into BIOS setup.

The drive settings are usually on the first 'page'.

Look to see if the floppy is set to 1.44MB.

I assume it's a 1.44

Hi Ying,

It must be in BIOS for windows to see it at all.

Maybe you are not on the right page in BIOS.

When you enter BIOS, what do you see?

Download and run Aida32. The program will analyse the hardware and software in your computer. If it makes no mention of your floppy drive then you will need to get a replacement.

I am having a similar/same problem of "Drive A:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." which applies to my floppy drive AND also the same problem is occurring to the brand new Memorex read and write CD device that I bought and installed yesterday. The Incorrect Function problem was occurring before I bought this new CD reader. I saw some comments in various postings in web sites saying to replace the CD ROM as it's probably gone bad but, it made no difference.
NOTE the following actions on my part trying to solve this problem. I looked at several articles in the MicroSoft technical web site but it is of no use as they don't have this Windows 2000 Pro problem listed, just for XP. On some posted messages in the various web sites I saw that Roxio and EasyCD Creater are blamed for conflicting with FD and CD functions but I don't see how they could knock off the floppy drive and the CD ROM reader from being read. Note that the drives all show up in the device manager, the hardware manager areas , the System info areas, etc, etc. The 2 drives just don't work even after uninstalling them and re-installing them using Control Panel. I also uninstalled them in CMOS without any success. Note that if I reboot into SAFE MODE then I can see the drives using DOS prompt, copy files to and from the floppy disc and read and copy files from the CD in the CD reader. I tend to cold boot after any changes if someone is wondering about that.
IF you or someone you know has any suggestions on what to try next I would sure like to read your suggestions. I have downloaded the Aida32 onto this PC but getting it onto the PC with the problems will be the next problem for me to solve since that file is large and I can't use a CD obviously to move the file.

I continued looking on HDs of the PC after posting previous message. No Roxio nor EasyCD Creater but INCD was on PC. After unloading INCD both floppy and CD ROM drives work just fine. Installing new software for the new CD ROM included newer version of INCD. All drives work ok.
