Hi I have just installed windows 2000 on a brand new server, spec as follows: -
Compaq Proliant ML350 G2 P3 512 MB RAM, 3 X 18.2GB Pluggable Ultra3 SCSI 10,000rpm HD, in a Raid 5 Config attached to a Smart Array 532 Controller.

All I did was install windows 2000 and boot it up, there were no problems with the install but I get the following error in event viewer: -

7024 The Messenger Service terminated with service specific error 2119.

I have since installed SP2 but this didn't fix it, I have found out that this is a resource issue down to speed or memory, but as you can see above it's a brand new server
with nothing but 2000 on it, and the spec is more than capable!!
Help.... Thanks

Try going into the Services applet and then manually starting that service and see what happens. And check the Event Viewer log to see if anything else dropped out....

Sorry should have mentioned I've tried that and it just fails, the only message that appears in event viewer is the one mentioned above. This is also the only message displayed when I try to manually start it! Any other ideas?

I received the same mesage when enabling NETBEUI on a multihomed server (two NIC's). I couldn't get rid of it no matter what I did. It has something to do with messenger service thinging two machines have the same name.

When I disabled the NETBEUI protocol, message dissapeared.

I also encounterd this problem on my newly installed Win2K server, but after CHANGING the IP of one of the network cards. My WINS server displayed the old IP for the [03h]Messenger registration. I deleted the registrations for that computer and restarted the messenger service in DOS (net start messenger) and it finally worked.

I also have this problem (MS support no help) but it is on a dell laptop win 2000 pro (one n/wk card). The computer is going slow irregularly and I think this might have something to do with it. Outlook takes an age to open but does sometimes work.

Anyone got any ideas?

I'm also getting "The Messenger service terminated with service-specific error 2119" on a Win2K Pro machine with SP2 and all the latest updates.

There's only one NIC in there and NETBUI is not installed. The TCP/IP connection is set up for DHCP.

Any ideas?

I have a Dell Server with 3x NIC - and got the same problem. I disabled NETBEUI on 2 of them, and messenger came up fine.
