Your lucky its a Maxtor......Your motherboard doesn't support drives above 8.4 the old dos limit. You need to install EZ-Bios on to the new drive. Then partition it......and it should work.
You can do all of this from the Maxiblast disk that came with your drive. Or even better go to Maxtors site and download a New version of Maxiblast that will put all the files and create a bootable disk, using Dr Dos. So all you do is boot to this disk......install EZ-Bios, partition and your set.
Its how I do all my drives....after your drive is up and running you can copy your old partitions to the new drive with the MaxiDisk and everything will boot just like before.
This can all be done using the Maxiblast disk.
If you want I can send you the compressed version of Maxiblast......to install it on a formatted floppy you need to do it from Dos. Once the boot disk with the Maxiblast software is on the new boot disk. That's all you will need to setup your new drive. The bios settings on your motherboard are not too important...even if your motherboard says you have 8.4 gigs the EZ-Bios takes over as you start to boot.
In fact even if you format a partition with EZ-Bios installed it stays intact. Though you can remove it using the Maxiblast disk, if you care to.
Its really pretty easy.......just watch what your doing.......especially if you copy a partition from one drive to the other.
Also you will need a boot disk for a version of Windows 9x to complete the EZ-Bios process. Then you can install any operating system you choose too.

Hope that helps!!!!

Windows 2000 Professional does not have the ability to translate hard
drive capacities greater than 8.4 GB when the drive in question has 15 Heads. Windows
2000 does not calculate LBA directly, as allowed for in the ATA-5 spec, and uses CHS
values to determine whether or not use LBA. It works fine for 16 headed drives, but truncates to 8 GB for 15 headed drives. The key to failure appears to be word 54 in
the ID drive table (current cylinders) along with word 3 (number of logical heads).
If the drive is configured as a 16 head drive, word 54 is 3FFFh (16383d) and word 3
is 0010h (16d). Windows 2000 reports the full capacity on the partition page of the
install. If the drive is configured as a 15 head drive, word 54 is 4443h (17475d) and
word 3 is 000Fh (15d). In this case, Windows 2000 only reports 8 GB on the partition
page of the install and we lose anything over 8 GB. Word 54 is adjusted up to compensate
for word 3 going down. CHS capacity between 15 and 16 heads remains the same as it
should.

Search Maxtor's site for SETGEOM.exe or e-mail them (that's how I got it). It changes the HD's geometry so that it's recognized properly by Win2k
