Comment:

I have installed a 160GB SATA hard disk on WIN 2000 server. After i install the SP4, from the disk administrator, i can only see 128 GB available. I have checked the BIOS, it is able to recognise the 160 GB hard disk.

I have made changes to the registry to include the EnableBigLba parameters after i have done a search in the internet, then i am able to see 149 GB available but i still cannot get the 160GB. I have also seach the maxtor website and it also indicate to make the changes to the registry which i had already done. Any idea ? Your comments is appreciated. Thanks.

Now that you have done the updates remove any partitions from the drive. reboot. Now see what disk manager reports for drive size for available partition space.

A 160GB harddisk doesn't contain 160GB. Drive manufacturers divide the total bytes of storage using a base of 1000 when it should be divided by 1024. This results in a larger number for advertising. That plus the fact that formatting takes about 8GB of space. It sounds as though you may have all the space accounted for already.

OtheHill is correct in what he is saying.

The fact that you are now seeing 149 GB instead of 128 GB means that your 48 Bit LBA change has kicked in and is now recognising your hard drive correctly.

The discrepancy is as explained by OtheHill.
