I hope someone can help me out with this problem. I have a Toshiba PIII laptop with 196MB RAM. Sometimes the CPU utilizatization goes to 100% and stays there even though I am not running any program. A look at the processes tell me that at times System Idle processes are taking up lot of CPU. Also when the systems is performing fine with CPU load at 3-4%, runing any video clip on any multimedia software takes up the CPU to 100% and this gives very bad quality video with jerks. Any help in this matter will be appreciated.
Check to see if 'indexing service' is running in 'Search File / folders'. If so -Disable that service, it will put your cpu at 100%usage. Your 'system idle process' should be at a high number.,right now while browsing, my 'system idle process' is at 99% and the 'taskmanager' is at 1%

Check to see that you have DMA enabled on the hard drive: Right click My Computer - Properties - Hardware - Device Manager - IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers - primary IDE channel (right click - properties)- Advanced - On both devices change transfer mode to DMA if available
