Can someone please help me? I have the same 0x0000007b problem with my computer. Win2000 doesn't even start up. The program says that I have a SCSI adaptor, but my computer is IDE. What can I do to solve this problem?

I have the same problem after adding / re-arranging hard drives. Try Article ID: Q198859 in the MS Knowledge base. (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q122/9/26.ASP). Í'm going to try their solution now, so I don't know if its solves the problem (yet).

0x0000007b Inaccessible Boot Device Error. I ran into the same problem when installing 2000. What it came down to was that I had a boot sector virus. If you read the error, it clearly states to run a virus check on the boot device (ide) before continueing. On SCSI drives, this error occurs when the SCSI adapter you are using does not have a bios on it for boot up.

I just upgraded my system. I used to have an ASUS P2B-L and P3/550Mhz running Win2KPro. Everything worked great. I just installed an Intel CA810EAL and P3/600Mhz. I'm using the same hard disk drive. Now I get the dreaded INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error. I booted from my Win2KPro CD-ROM and installed to a fresh directory with no problem. No special drivers were needed. So, Win2KPro has native support for this IDE chipset. Why won't it boot my original/running install?

Here's a Microsoft knowledgebase article that might be helpful too. Basically, you can't move harddrives (or images) around like you could with Win98 or NT. MS Tech Support admits it's becoming a HUGE issue with W2K. Check out article ID: Q216915

I'm trying to get my PCI Serial Port to function correctly (long story, huge headache). I'm messing around in W2k hardware install and I set up something called "Primary IDE PCI something or other".

To be fair, it did warn me my computer could stop working, but it was very indiscreet. Everything worked fine until I had done this and restarted, when I got the blue-screen of death stop error reading 0x0000007B inaccessible_boot_device.

I'm using a 20gb seagate hd, assigned IDE-0. It should be noted everything worked fine until I added this Primary IDE PCI thing. I've tried a McAfee boot sector virus scan outside Windows, everything checked out fine. I've messed around in Bios.

So, I need to know one of these: a)how to fix that, b)how to get a command prompt without the Stop error getting in my way, or regrettably c)how to format my hd from outside windows.

Hey guy who said u used Win2k cd as a boot disk, how? I've tried setting CDROM as the first bootdevice and putting in the win2k cd, but that didn't work.

Anyways, if you post a new message in this forum, plz email it to me also, it is doubtful I will check back in this thread.

Hey guys,

I might have an answer for you on the "inaccessible boot device" issue when loading Win2k. I was getting the same blue screen error on a fresh install. After hours of ASUS tech support and more hours of net searching, I switched my HDD cable to a regular 40 pin and was able to boot into Win2k. It seems that Win2k has an issue with ATA66/100 cables and/or drives. Try another HDD cable. Hope this helps.

Carlos

I had this issue when putting my existing Win 2k drive in a new case (and board.)

I resolved it by disabling UDMA in the bios. Good Luck!

Sorry for not entering my e-mail but I hate spam.

Just wanted to let you know a change to a 40-pin standard IDE cable worked fine for me too! I am using an ASUS P4T motherboard, Ultra ATA100 bult into the motherboard
and IBM Deskstar 40GB diskdrives.

Many thanks to Carlos! You saved my day (or rather night :-)!

Hello again!
I tried also disabling UDMA (Mode 5) and setting it to UDMA Mode 2 in BIOS according to Ryan's recommendation. This also works!

Now I guess it is possible to install W2k, then install an update of the ATA driver (since ASUS for some reason only allows a Windows install of this driver) and then restore the BIOS config to Mode 5 and run as expected. However I have not tested this yet.

Hello once more!
Now I have found a working solution for W2k problems with my Ultra100 card in UDMA mode 5 giving an Inaccessible Bootdevice error.

Do like this:

Use the Ultra100 cable (often yellow with blue connector at one end). _No_ need to switch cable types to normal IDE.

Now:

1. Go into BIOS and change from Auto drivetype to Manual type. Set the UDMA Mode to 2 and let all other parameters remain on their automatically suggested values (Works on Award BIOS anyway).
2. Install W2k with default drivers.
3. Install ASUS INF-updates from the CD-ROM that came with the motherboard.
4. Install ASUS enhanced ATA driver from the same CD-ROM that came with the motherboard.
5. Reboot and on bootup go into BIOS and change back to Auto detect mode (which means UDMA mode 5 is restored).

Now W2k will work just fine and the disk will be very fast once more!

(I get my login prompt in 17 seconds from the moment I turn on the power, but then it is just a default install on a P4 1700MHz system :-)

I am using an ASUS P4T motherboard, Ultra ATA100 built into the motherboard and IBM Deskstar 40GB diskdrives.

Many thanks once more to Ryan and Carlos for providing all the clues to the solution!

/Mats

Ok, when I installed Win2000AdvServer, I got the same prob
I got past it though
How, you ask??

Well, inaccessable bootdevice, is the device where the OS boots from, so during installation, that's the cd-rom drive
Make sure u disconnect or disassemble all parts u don't need to install, like NIC-cards and soforth.
Try and get a late model cd-rom drive somewhere, cause win2000 is very sensible for old or obsolete drivers. I did it with a LG
Install and configure win2000, shutdown, reinstall all other parts (NIC) restart and win2000 will recognize the parts for configuration

Hav fun
