Hello !
I am trying to delete the atapi.sys file (W2K system file) because i need to replace it by a more recent one to address Unreachable Harddisk space (losing 1,5 gig) I really am at the end of my possibilities : tried everything (also Sdelete from sysinternals.com) But : NO WAY sir : or is there ???

You cant delete it because its being used right? Try booting your computer from a win 98 boot disk and replacing it from DOS. You can download a boot disk by clicking here if you dont have one.

There is some logic in your answer ( i can follow you there :) ) but an extra complicating factor is the NTFS file system (yes FAT32 is my choice from now on because of this sort of things)
So this doesnot work Thanks anyway !
(and please use again those little Brain cells as detective Poirot says...)

There is a little program (44KB) that Microsoft put out for this. Its called inuse.exe, availible on the W2k Pro Resource Kit CD in the compmgmt.cab. You can probably download it from Microsoft.

Mission Almost impossible succeeded !
inuse didnot seem to work and i had to disable WFP (windows File Protection) with a registertweak , then copied the atapi.sys file to its destination.
so i recovered 945 MB of my 10 gig HD who was stolen by the POOR freaking BIOS of my CPQ presario 1260 laptop (which isnot upgradable !)
