I want to setup a free webserver at my house. I have been using Abyss webserver which was extremly simple to setup and use. However, it lacks functionality, I cant use asp, cgi, or advanced languages. I also want to be able to use frontpage extensions and to run a nonstop live webcam. Please advise on any free software to accomplish this. I would like to use IIS, but have read that it is extremly difficult to setup on xp home. Thanks for any help offered.

Well unfortunatly without hacking XP HE, there is no way to use IIS.

If your are dead set on using ASP
And option would be (for production only)

To use it for anything other than personal use, you would have to purchase it.

You can use Apache Web Server for Windows to run php, cgi, mysql. Here is a link to great site to help you do it.

Hope this helps a lil

Ian, I would advise strongly against ASP and Frontpage Extensions. The most popular solution — Apache mixed with PHP — is more popular for a reason: it's far superior.

If you want a quick, no-setup version of Apache which already has PHP and SQLite (a nice SQL database), try MiniApache.

Out of all of the dynamic/advanced scripting languages, I recommend you experiment or learn PHP. It is probably the most straightforward to understand, plus there are a lot of free scripts and support.

If you would care to tell us what kinds of scripts you want to run on the server, we could give you some recommendations. For example: statistics, content management (aka portal), message boards, guestbook etc.

on the contrary, ASP, ASP.NET and msSQL are actually more popular. the reason why people on these forums use PHP and MySQL is because it costs you nothing and you can run it with apache which is also free. i have looked over what many employers are wanting and they all want someone that knows ASP. ASP a better language to get familiar with because of this and because you can do a heck of a lot more stuff with ASP than you can PHP. i would know because i had a mentor for a project that i was doing to graduate and he has been working with ASP and VB for 20 years now and he knows how this stuff works.

Mainly, I am looking to run a live webcam from my room. Secondly, I wanted to setup frontpage extensions because this is my preffered editor and I like the easy to use features in it as compared with dreamweaver. Also, I wanted to setup asp and asp.net so I could do some testing with the languages. I started coding asp this year and was looking to expand my knowledge. Currently, my web hosts provide lack of functionality in asp because of security risks. I figured if I could setup a asp server I could run all the functionality I needed.
