Is it acceptable to have the registrant of your domain name also host your website or should the website be hosted separately by another company? Any thoughts? Pros and cons?

I would have your domain registrar and hosting company separated. There have been countless cases of hosting companies not "giving you" your domain if/when you switch to a different hosting company.
Register your domain yourself so that you have complete control over it.
