Hello I was hoping maybe I could get some ideas. I have searched through the post but haven't had much luck. I am a full time IT student about to graduate college and am looking for a way to post what I have done in class on a site for employers to see.
I have used some screen capture software and saved some videos in flash format: how to's etc.
I would like to possiably register a domain and use some software to create my site. My question is how do I get started. i am sure I will need adequte storage. What software do I use to create the page etc. What kind of cost is involved for an average site. I appreciate everyones help in advance.

Thanks

hi,

you will need to:

1. register a domain name ... i use www.bravenet.com as i find them cheap and easy to use

2. you will need a web site host ... www.bravenet.com also offers hosting but i use www.deluxhosting.net ... good price and very good support

3. you will need to design a web site ... you can use a web editor (of which there are many, both free and not free) ... or you can use something like joomla which i have been working with for a few weeks now ...it is called 'content management software' and helps you manage the content of your web site the easy way ... one word of warning though - there is a very steep learning curve with joomla but if you stick at it, it is well worth the effort

hope this helps

Keep mentally active.

What do search engines really think of your web site?

Just my opinion....

While your idea of having an "online resume (CV)" is not a bad one, I'd guess that many prospective employers won't be bothered to go online to view it. By all means include the URL in your "paper resume (CV)", but also make a DVD version. It could simply be a duplicate of your website, only on DVD instead of a web server. It would still open in their default browser. The only extra step would be burning the DVD, which takes no time at all, but may be more convenient for some employers to view.

You don't say which branch of IT you studied. Depending what your skills are, someone here may be able to advise you on the type of content that would have the most impact on a prospective employer. For example, if your skill set is in multimedia, you might do better with an online (and DVD copy) show reel, made up of mock ups (fictitious product adverts, etc). Or, if you're into building websites (of course, you wouldn't be asking if you were), you could include thumbnails that contain links to mock up sites, of various designs and layouts. Don't hesitate to take advantage of the vast experience of the members here.

I'm sure, like me, others here would wish you all the best in finding a suitable position, in your chosen field.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.
