I've done a lot of web programming both at home and for work. Someone is asking me to setup a small (4 or 5 static pages) website for their business. They have the artistic ability, not I, so they will do most of the design work and I'll just set up the website and domain name etc.

For those who do this or have paid for this, what are normal rates charged for doing something like this? I'm not worried about charging as much as I can, but also don't want to say "I'll do it for $50".

I'm fairly current in my web skills, so am not worried about making a decent and usable site. I just don't have any idea what to charge.

Use the link below to see how I do it. Bear in mind that I do not have to make a living doing this. Pictures and content text are furnished by the customer.

Converting the design to a light-weight (efficient), W3C valid, and cross-browser HTML layout, for 4-5 pages, with normal/standard text content which is provided by them, I'll do it for $250 and could be lower if the design is *real* simple =D

But I believe this also depends on the country. On mature economy countries, the rate will be much higher. That's why there're sites like this to outsource the work to workers from countries with emerging economy (with risks hiring an incompetent developer ~ although the site have some kind of prevention system for this).

* affiliate link warning =D

And for "how I set my price", although this might not applicable to you as you don't do it as a regular work:

Option #1:

Understand how much do you want to have as a "salary" for a month (based on your skills and experience, compare with people's salary working on a company, etc.), and calculate the price for a project based on the time required to complete the project.

Option #2:

If overwhelmed by requests, the price is too low.

Thanks. These are the types of response I was looking for. I'm not looking to a living at this but just something to do on the side, but without just giving it away.

As a second question, what do you charge for programming that involves database work (input forms to collect requests, data, etc).

If it's me, then I'll still calculate based on the time required to finish the work.

But of course I'd have to consider my skill on doing it. I mean, if I'm asked to do something that I'm not used to, which means I'll probably need to "research and get reference" while working, I'll reduce the "monthly rate".

input forms to collect requests, data

If it's just to create a basic form (eg: only a single page form) without the need of a complicated HTML layout, and put the submitted content to database, and also show a single (but paged) admin-only page to view the database content, all with basic HTML layout (but still W3C valid), I'll do it for $50 and will be delivered bug-free-guaranteed in 48 hours =D

Hi,

Once I asked (UK, London) and the pro would charge 50-150 £ per page. It all depends on your experience and how you do it. Good luck!

Best,

Hemen Eghvay.

PS: I think in US is cheaper. :-)
