Comment:

Anyone know of a good webhost; one with domain hosting, cgi-bin, FTP, and Shell Access? Finding a good one with shell access is proving tougher than I thought.

I want to be able to edit my Perl scripts on the fly rather than editing them locally, then uploading them to the server.

Thanks,
Tommy

I use hostforweb.com and have been very pleased with them. I have a reseller account, but I assume their normal hosting accounts also have shell access enabled.

I don't use them, but DreamHost has a VERY good looking plan for $8.00/year with 3-year signup.

I'm half tempted to run with it myself actually. 2.4GB space, 120GB transfer, CGI, PHP, 75 user accounts all with email, FTP, and shell access, plus a full Unix shell account? Beautiful, now I just need a domain name :)

To get the $8/yr, then I think you need to sign a 3-year contract.

Otherwise it's $10/mo plus a $25 setup fee if you pay month to month. If you sign up for a full year then it's still $10/mo but no setup fee.

I agree - contracts suck. They do offer a 3 month trial though, so maybe that's enough time to decide if you like them. One of the reasons I still don't have a host is that I haven't found one I really like that's fairly inexpensive (I'd like to be able to run a Bittorrent server/tracker). The other is, as I said above, that I can't come up with a domain name :(

Man, yeah nothing against that hosting company, because I've honestly never heard of them before now, but 3 years is an awful long time to be with a hosting company.

The 3 month trial is definitely a good thing, but man...3 years. Ha ha. I would definitely go with the $10/month thing (It's only $25/year more) just to be on the safe side.

Just to clarify...It's $8/month, not per year. Right? I don't see anything about a three year contract, but to get the $8/month price you have to prepay for two years ($192).

Oops. Yeah, $8/mo. Eight bucks a year would be a pretty good price :)

According to their TOS:

FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS

Customer agrees to a thirty (30) day contract minimum (or six (6) or twelve (12) month contract depending on length of pre-payment), beginning upon commencement of service.

There is a per-plan one time setup fee of $24.95 and if the customer wishes to cancel DreamHost Web Hosting services within ninety-one (91) days of the initial signup they shall be able to do so for any reason (aside from disablement for Terms of Service or Spam Policy violations) and have their money promptly refunded.

At the end of the contract term, the contract will automatically renew for successive thirty (30) day periods (or six (6) or twelve (12) month periods, depending on length of pre-payment) indefinitely until canceled in writing. After the first 91 days a canceled account will be canceled before the next payment is due and no more billing will occur nor will any payment be refunded, even for unused portions.

---

They don't explicitly mention the 24 month option, but it sounds like that for whatever amount you prepay you're actually signing a contract. Since you've already paid all the money I guess it does't really matter though...
