Hi,

I have a friend who has a small trailer-park/beach/restaurant on the river about 20 minutes outside the city. The city is usually foggy but it's usually sunny out there so he wants to use a webcam to point at the beach so that people from the city can look at the weather in real time (or within 5 - 10 minutes) to see if it's worth the drive. I don't know much about web-cams but from what i've heard i think you need a static IP address to do what he wants but hopefully i'm wrong about that. Can someone suggest a good method for him to be able to accomplish his goal with only a dial-up connection and no static IP address? His only option where he's located is a dial-up connection.

thanks in advance.

hi
i only have limited knowlegde of webcams as am mainly deal with webdesign, content and websevers. but i wouldnt recommend using dial up.
do to the fact that to post a real time webcam you need to have a constant connection to the server where you sending the images. due to dial up it sometime cuts of every so many hours. plus think of how it much it would cost in phone calls
. so i would invest in broadband.

hope this helps

Paul,

Please read posts thoroughly before responding. Please re-read the last line of my post. I stated clearly that his "ONLY OPTION" is a dial-up connection. When you respond without reading clearly, others who may have actual help see that there's already been a response and skip over my post. I know myself, when i post a question i try to answer a few as well and i only look for posts which have no responses.

A 24/7 dial-up connection is only $24.95/month so there's no worries about the cost and because he's out of town like i stated, there is no broadband available, which is the reason for this post.

If anyone can offer actual help about how to set up a webcam with ONLY A DIAL-UP CONNECTION it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,
wiredsj

Don't get your panties in a bunch man.

You do not need the users to actually access the camera. There are applications out there for free (I used one a couple years ago called ConquerCam) which will create an image from the camera on a regular interval and upload it through FTP. Just have him create his website and have a page for the "current image". That page should reference the image that is being uploaded every x minutes.

There *might* be a way to set one of these up in such a way that the connection through dial-up is made before the image is made and sent and then closed. But, that's another thing entirely.

Paul/Michael,

Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Panties not in a bunch, just a pet peeve i have with forums when people, even when well intentioned don't read the posts clearly which can cause someone with a possible solution to pass over their post because they see it's already been answered. It makes the person that made the post consider re-posting which makes them look bad, so it's a no-win situation.

Obviously Paul meant well as he even came back and readdressed the post after i complained. Paul, thanks for not taking offence to my response and double thanks for offering a good solution and link! ;o)

I think 99% of people in this forum are excellent and find it a great resource!

thanks again,
wiredsj
