I have cable internet and my provider states on their web site that I can't run a web server on my computer. Why? Is there a way around this? I want to host a website that runs asp but I don't want to have to pay $40 a month to do it.

Configure the server to use a port other than 80. This will however make it a little different to access your site. For instance say you use port 2323. Now your site will be at http://www.yoursite.com:2323

you can get free url redirection from

http://www.freedomain.co.nr/

so instead of

http://www.yoursite.com:2323

you could have

http://www.yoursite.co.nr which links to your http://www.yoursite.com:2323 but without all the port number business

Well, the first thing you really have to check is if your ISP even blocks port 80, which is the standard port for http requests. Go to portdetective.com and get your open ports scanned. If port 80 isn't blocked then you can setup a webserver without changing anything other than just installing the webserver. If the port is blocked do like ben said and just change it to another open port. URL redirection isn't an issue in this matter. Cable companies just don't want u to run a webserver b/c you could bog network traffic down. Hope thid helps
