I am planning on using 1&1 Internet Host to host a website. I questioned 1&1 if there is a way to limit bandwidth to my package limit(500GB monthly transfer volume). They replied that they cannot place a limit on bandwidth and will charge 50 cents per GB anytime the site exceeds the monthly transfer volume. I know it would be rare to exceed such a limit due to the size of bandswidth. However, what if the site is hit with a denial-of-service attack. I have read horror stories where people were charges 1000's of dollars for exceeded bandwidth. Is there a way to prevent this? I would assume if I noticed that the bandwidth was reaching it's limit I could put up a splash page and break all the links so traffic cannot enter site and only hit the splash page to limit bandwidth. But, that would take monitoring the site through the day. I was wondering if there is another solution.

Could someone share their advise?

Thanks,
Mike

Change host?

This is the first time I hear about a hosting company that won't "suspend the account" when id gets over the bandwidth limit << which should be normal and very common among hosting companies.

Yeah, that's a pretty stupid policy. I'm not sure why they would charge you for a DOS attack either. I've never seen a reputable company do that either really.

500GB? surely you mean MB. We offer unlimited bandwidth at WebGrafix if you are interested. If you do mean GB then you will never reach that limit in a month. What sort of website are you doing?
