I need to update my business website from two different locations (at work and from home). Is there a program I can use (preferably free) that will recognise the existing (unchanged) files and allow me to upload only the index page and any new graphics on it, pics, links etc. I don't want to have to upload the entire website again when I go to the 'other' location.
As I don't have the files on sep media here at my home, I will need to download the existing site as it is now, as a starting point to re-edit it, then upload. Next time I'm at work, I will do it from there.
I am the only webmaster for the site, hence the need to manage it from two locations (100 kms apart!).
not sure if this will help ... i use filezilla to upload and download my files using ftp
any time i make changes to my site, i just upload the changed files ... it is manual rather than automatic
my concern with your set up is that you will end up with 2 'different' sites (at home and at work) as you will make changes on each one which you will upload but you are not talking about synchronising your home and work sites
As you say Serge, the changes made on one won't be made on the other. The two computers are not synchronised and that's what needs to be in effect. I just don't know how to do that.
i have a similar problem in that i work on my laptop and upload the latest changes to my web site from my laptop but i use my desktop to backup all my data
the way i synchronize both is by using a usb drive ... when i work on my web site on my laptop, i copy the folder to my usb drive ... and then i copy the folder from my usb drive onto my desktop
i understand that there are new usb drives now that include a synchronization program to keep data files in synch ... you might want to check that up
yes, I decided that that is probably the best way too and bought a new 1gB memory stick yesterday. I will "transport" the index page and its new graphics between machines.
Another way would be to configure my work machine for remote access and then edit the page from home, as if I was really there! Both comps are on broadband so that should work too. I haven't done RA before so will have to learn it first.
For my site I built a Content Management System (Management Login Area) so I could log in anywhere to manage my data (create, update, delete, view). Maybe this will work for you too.
