I have no experience in HTML or any web development tools whatsoever.

I am looking to learn a web development tool from scratch… well enough so that I can produce websites to a fairly decent standard.

I am still undecided on which web development programme I wish to learn but ideally, as I have do not have much spare time, I would prefer to stick to learning just the one (for now anyway).

After looking round the net I have discovered that for a relatively simple website I may be able to get away with just learning a WYSIWYG tool which I have been advised would be far quicker to learn than HTML.

After further investigation it seems as though ASP.NET is the most popular WYSIWYG tool around at the moment so I have downloaded Visual Web Developer 2005 to give it a go.

I have downloaded a couple of ASP.NET tutorials but they all seem to be designed for people who have had some kind of previous experience eg. C, Visual Basic etc….. What I am looking for is a tutorial (preferably a video tutorial) that will teach me a WYSIWYG tool from scratch (ie. for someone who has no previous experience)

It doesn’t necessarily have to be ASP.NET if somebody can recommend another tool/programme I am open to suggestions, but, ideally I do not wish to pay a penny for either the software or the tutorial

Hi,

You could have a look at www.webmonkey.com - might help you to get some idea of how things work from scratch.

To be honest though, I think that web design is not something that you can master quickly. Takes time to make professional looking sites, even with a WYSIWYG tool. You don't need to be any kind of expert in coding, but it helps if you have a rough idea at least of how the pages are being created, especially when you run into problems.

You can certainly teach yourself though with help from other sites and forums.

Good luck.

As others suggest, if you want to learn how to create a website for real, then you must:

- Learn (modern) HTML
- Learn (modern) CSS

The above will allow you to create modern web pages.

- Learn DHTML (JavaScript)

To let you create a nicer modern web pages.

- Learn server-side scriptings (PHP/ASP/etc)

So you can create dynamic pages / applications / database stuff.

None of it can be mastered in a day or two. So if you "don't have time", you'd better use some friendly "HTML Builder" like the one in GooglePages, or use a ready-made CMS (WordPress, Joomla, phpBB, etc).

If no CMS and/or HTML builder serves your needs, then hire a competent web developer =D
