subdomain setup

I have created a subdomain:
test1.mydom.com
I created a directory off the main domain root called:
test1
Into it I put an index.html
When I browse to:
http://www.test1.mydom.com
It flashes very briefly, apparently an error, then back to main.
There could be a problem with where you've located the subdomain's directory. Whenever I have a subdomain, it is actually located a folder with the same name as the subdomain. But that folder resides in the public-html (web root) folder! (Your web host might use a different name for web root.)
This is not what I would have expected. It surprised me and may be confounding you, too.
The address is subdomain.domainame.com, but the files reside in a folder in the web root.
