Hi i am trying to re-design my website (www.chrisdocherty.co.uk portfolio section) using CSS to position all of the HTML elements but i cant get it to look the same in both IE and FireFox.
At the moment it looks as it is suposed to in IE but is not right in FireFox
I am using Dreamweaver 8 to do this and all the elements on the design view look as they are suposed to.
I have also noticed that viewing it in Opera it displays it the same way as FireFox does.
Thanks

This question comes up A LOT. The problem is that IE does NOT adhere to CSS standards very well, whereas Firefox, Opera and others do a much better job. However the majority of users use IE.
I do not use any WYSIWYG editors such as Dreamweaver. But, I would venture a guess that it is optomized for IE (which kinda makes sense based upon the user demographics)
So, what is the solution? Well, if you first design your pages for IE, then I would say about 70% to 80% of the code will display properly in other browsers. However, if you first design your pages for more compliant browsers, then I would say about 90% of the code will display properly in IE.
In either method you still need to go back and tweak the code till it looks right in both browsers. You can almost always get the look you want in both browsers by being a little creative. But, you will usually have to make some concessions. The trick is to keep the design simple. The more complex you get the harder it will be to get it to look correct across browsers. For example, I still predominantly use tables for positioning.
So, there is no real solution, per say. Good luck.

I have found that you have more luck not positioning elements at all using the traditional method and have had more success using the float element to position things.
