I'm trying to set up a subdomain on my computer - http://test.localhost - but I'm not really getting anywhere. I'm using Apache 2.0.54, and I'm also trying it on another computer using IIS 5.

In IIS, I tried creating a "new Site" under the Default Web Site, and also I tried createing a "new Web Site" directly under the computer, but it doesn't work. I'm not sure what to use for the ip address either (I tried that computer's IP and I also tried letting it automatically assign it).

With apache, I tried the VirtualSite example in the httpd.conf file with the same results - nothing comes up when I type http://test.localhost/index.html

Anyone know why this doesn't work?

Ok, I got the VirtualSite thing to work in Apache, except that I cannot access these virtual sites from other machines within the network - only from the machine Apache is running on.

And also, do I have to add these virtual hosts to my hosts file (running Windows)?

Still haven't figured anything out with IIS.

Yes. You will need either a hosts file on each pc or you will need to run a nameserver for the other machines to resolve the subdomains corresponding to the virtual hosts configured in Apache. I know nothing about IIS so I can't help you there. Good luck!
