Hi, i have recently bought the domain chrisdocherty.co.uk and want to host my website myself on my own server running windows XP and Apache.
However, when i set up my web forwarding i enetred my IP address of my server machine but forgot that my IP address changes and so therefore i need to keep updating the IP address in the web forwarding.
I have also noticed that using this method when i do have the website live, in the address bar it continuously says www.chrisdocherty.co.uk no matter what page i am on. (i.e it doesn't say www.chrisdocherty.co.uk/anyfolder/anyfile.html)
Also when i refresh a page it automaticaly goes back to the home page because it allways say www.chrisdocherty.co.uk in th address bar
Any one know how i can resolve this so that when i type my domain in it will always go to my server and so that i can see which directory i am in on the address bar.

hi,
That kind of web forwarding is just a html frame with the child frame content points to your server.
To make the domain "really" point to your server (like when you nslookup the domain then it'll show your IP), you need to setup things in the DNS managing that domain. This depends on the control panel you have. You might want to ask them if this can really be done using their service, otherwise you need to point the domain to another DNS server (which you can manage) then set the things in there.
You can also setup your own DNS server in the same PC (so you can put your IP in the "DNS Servers", not in the "web forwarding" anymore), but this is overkill, I did it once but just for educational purpose. And using the same server for both DNS and webserver is kinda pointless.
If your current host won't allow you to manage your own DNS settings, here's a DNS you can use, but you need to pay again: dyndns.org

no-ip.com has a similar service for people with dynamic IP addresses.
Just a note of caution. If your website starts to gain any sort of popularity, your ISP will notice and probably make you move to a hosting service or upgrade to their "business" package.
Alert me after you respond otherwise I'll forget to come back.
