Comment: Hi there, I need to know how you route different domain names to different directories on my IIS Server? (If it can be done with that?) I.e, the domain xxxxxx.com goes to wwwroot/xxxxxx.com and domain yyyyyy.co.uk goes to wwwroot/yyyyyy.co.uk e.t.c, e.t.c Please can someone help! Many thanks. If It's not broken, Don't fix it!

Reply: (edit)>> Ifnot, do you know of any good, free, oter webservers? - But for windows! << Apache. http://httpd.apache.org/ Apache's virtual server function will allow you to run many web sites from the same server. There is a Windows version that runs well on Windows XP. Not sure about Windows 2000. It also rnd on Windows 98 but not so well. Stuart

Reply: (edit)Well, without a clear explanation of the problem, it is difficult to diagnose. Whem you set up multiple domains what DOES happen? Do all requests go to the same folder? Can you set up a single domain to work? Michael J

Reply: (edit)Sorry, This is how my setup currently works. I have a few windows 2000 servers, (obviousally, therefore I am on IIS 5.0 ) I have got one domian name poining to the IP of my internet connection, But I want to setup multiple hosts with domains, rather than haivng to use; http://domainnaime/subfoldersname If that makes sense. I created a new site within IIS 5.0, and int eh IP Address box, I put an IP which I thought was unused. (Not sure of any other ways to determine) -That failed, so I tried with using the port number, but that didn't work either! Am I doing this right!? If It's not broken, Don't fix it!

Reply: (edit)OK, you still didn't answer the questions as to what problems you were experiencing. But, now you are saying you have multiple servers and it appears you only have one external IP address. So, I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish. You stated you were trying to set up multiple domains on one machine (so what are the other servers for?). I created a new site within IIS 5.0, and int eh IP Address box, I put an IP which I thought was unused. Say what? Do you have multiple EXTERNAL IP addresses? I thought you only had ONE external (i.e public) IP address. If that is the case you need to set the host header names for each site to the appropriate domain name. http://www.windowsitpro.com/Windows... You will also need to make sure the DNS records for the domains point to your external domain. Michael J

Reply: (edit)Hi, sorry for not properly answering the question, However what you have posted prettymuch answers it. I have now got it sussed by using the port, however, ofcourse this has limited usage. a. can you please test externally for me? http://heavens-end.co.uk:56 b. Yes I only have one internet connection = 1 external ip?.........how do you get more than one!? The other machines are just aside at the moment, I am in progress of making changes, but as bottom line, the other machines work as Network Load Balacning - Somewhen to also go into hosting more websites, But thats another thing - Im not sure how you tell it to look on which server for which website, If that makes sense.
I think headers will so the trick, I will go follow that link you provided in that case. Thanks very much for yor help, However, Is there any change yurself or someone else may be able to anser the other questions in this post - To save me bombaridng the forum with many other threads!? Many thanks.

Reply: (edit)YOu will need to contact your ISP. With my ISP I can have up to 3 or 4 external IPs - Hhowever, I just use 1 since I have my router directly connected to the modem. If I wanted to have multiple external IPs I would just need to connect a switch to the modem. Then the devices connected to the switch would receive independant external IPs up to the number I am allowed. Many ISPs only allow 1 external IP, so you would need to contact them for specifics. As to having different ports, that is NOT a good solution. You should be using host headers, but do whatever you want. Michael J

Reply: (edit)Oh right...that makes sense. I don't know how many I get, I'll have to give them a bell I guess. It has to be a modem then? not router? No I gather ports is really not a good solution, im about to go look at headers, But I don't understand what they are, ay hints please?! Mnay thnaks for your continued help.
