Problem customizing php script

Specs: Windows XP
I purchased a php script and would like to make some custom changes, mainly on the look and feel of the website.

I have no basic knowledge in php, yet, so far I just want to locate the files I need to modify, most of it is words or html, I can do that easily, i did perl and html a long time ago so I am comfortable making basic work.

i used the software edit plus 3 to open and view the php file, i was able to determine from a template file that the footer I want to modify is located in the config.php file, now this file i can't read, the top part in the #'s is good, the rest is one gigantic text block, no words, nothing else.

any ideas ?? all the other php files open up without a problem.

Check the line endings?? If it was created on a Mac or *nix machine, the lines might not 'wrap' properly.

jEdit or Notepad++ should open it fine.

Or, could be obfuscated purposely to prevent you from modifying it?

If so, you'd need to use a PHP Pretty Printer/Beautifer/Tidy to clean up the source. But all the comments are going to be removed & variables will have random names - will be a PITA to change any logic.
