Comment: I've exceeded my monthly bandwidth limit by far due to a stupidity with a PHP error. I made the script before I knew much about PHP and it doesn't have any error-checking. It generated a huge error log which bumped up my transfer usage by about 1.5GB. I only have a tiny amount of allocated bandwidth, 250MB in fact, and so the bill for this extra transfer is rather large. I can't afford to pay the bill and so my account will be terminated. I've just downloaded the whole site via my FTP account, so this is OK. However, my domain, www.james-greenwood.co.uk, I am not sure what to do. I am going to start looking for a web host right away but I want my domain to point to it. When my web hosting company, Purple Cloud, terminate my account will that mean my domain too? I don't really understand, to be honest. When I did a WHOIS search, I am the official registrar which is nice. What do I do to keep my domain while my account is terminated? I want to make it point to my new web host once I get it. Thanks and please reply ASAP! James

Reply: (edit)your domain name wont be terminated, you usually buy it with a contract of 1 year 2 year 3 year 5 year 10 year they cant take that away from you, unless the package you bought of them was combined with your domain name and FTP account Jaymc.co.nr

Reply: (edit)If you are the registrant for the domain, then you will have received a certificate for the domain from Nominet UK as proof of legal custody of it. What I suggest you do is ask the registrar you registered it with to redirect the DNS to a new host. At least for the interim I suggest 34sp.com as a suitable host. They are British (yes, they own the servers themselves, located in London, not some reseller for US servers), and they will give you 1 Gig a month bandwidth plus the full features, for the basic package price of £25 for the year. They also accept payment by cheque or bank transfer, if you don't have a card. With 34sp, if you go over in any month they simply take it off the next month's allowance, or you can pay for the over - currently £1.50 per 1000MB excess, so with them the over of 1.5 Gig would have cost you just £2.25. If going over becomes regular they give you the chance to buy more as part of your package, or to upgrade your space which includes extra bandwidth anyway. Take a look at what they offer, and judge for yourself.

Reply: (edit)@Jamie Yes, I registered the domain for the standard period of two years. I bought the domain at the same time as the web hosting package but they were treated as seperate orders. @SafeTsurfa Yes, I received that certificate and printed it off. It's stuck up on my wall now. 34sp sound good because they're British and provide a nice amount of bandwidth. Whoops! Sorry everyone for wasting you're time, I've managed to sort out the problem with my web host and they've agreed to let me pay a smaller amount, which I am happy with. I'm going to bookmark this page as "34sp" so next time I need to change host (which may be quite soon) or need to recommend a host, this'll be the one. Thanks again, James
