ok, i know javascript can do a whole lotta weird cool things and i was wondering if php can do a lot of the things that javascript can. if it cant, about what percentage can it do? i ask beccause i'd totally rather use php over javascript, javascript is stupid and i dont know a whole lot of it, the syntax that is.

PHP is completely server side, mainly used to

collect client Info
do calculations
read, write, create, ammend, delete files remotley through a browser to work with the webpage

However you can do almost anything with Java, especially in web pages with 1000's of cool stuff

did you know that Java can also be used to control things in the house

you know phone a special number on your mobile phone to turn the oven on at home or what ever (future proposal) well Java can cater for this

Javascript is used for client side tasks. An example would be opening two pages in two seperate frames with one link. PHP is for server side tasks, such as guestbooks, forums.

Jamie:
You are confusing Java and Javascript. Java is a complex programming language, like C++. Javascript is a simple scripting language.

Beside all the things that have been said; JavaScript is also required for menu's, advanced lay-out, css-control, dynamic styles etc etc. You cannot make a site look nice and dynamic without javascript. You think about javascript too much in terms of a program, and not as a script wich can control much about everything that is shown in a browser window...
