Well, I posted a Q in Programming, and not one bothered to answer:
http://www.computing.net/programming/wwwboard/forum/13307.html
Bascally, I am creating an offline website of sorts. The pages will all be written in printer friendly format. I can write the HTML pages myself or use MS Word, Power Point, etc...
I had asked about an installation program that would start with an Auto Start from the CD, give a choice to install all files & folders on C: or leave them on the CD and have a program call on those particular files.
For security & copy write reasons, I would like to make it as difficult as possible to keep people from just opening a page & copy/paste/reproduce & publish my efforts...
Scripts work fine mostly, but I always prompt scripts, keeping the web site's no right-click & others from working. Although, there are other ways of embedding some types of protection to a certain percent of functionality.
I sm still unsure how some pages, you can copy/paste the text & save that as .html, and when you open them (with text only), the SP2 on XP blocks Active content...what's active...has to be encryption???
It would really be nice to encrypt the entire thing (CD & all files) & cannot seem to figure out which direction to go...with a program calling on whichever drive they happen to have the CD...
I have Office XP with Word, Power Point, Access & Excel, and I also have Adobe Photoshop 6.0, which I'm having troubles making anything & have downloaded many tutorials...
MS Word creates web pages, & maybe this is only on my machine; the pages are saved as some either filtered, archive or plain web page format. Some people have difficulty reading or accessing Word-made pages on some machines with XP wishing to access a data base on a non-admin account...I did the last go-around with this machine (before crashing) with XP Home.
I prefer to have my HTML simple too, but I might go ahead & use MS Word or Power Point to make the web pages anyway...
These new Office XP Pro features & the truly amazing Power Point...I'm not used to them at all. However, provided everyone's PC can read the pages written in them, it would make creation & distribution much easier, but I posted & never got why XP (limited user prov) wouldn't access the pages written on the web with MS Word, nor would the danged program open a help file. It just kept popping up this annoying installer that never worked...cancelling over & over would finally show page on web.
Before this becomes a book...I know...TOO LATE! I guess this is my question for today:
1. With the available programs I have, and taking into consideration what I'm wanting to do (conclusion below), can anyone give me some advice or references to links for advice? I'd like to know which programs to use for what purposes, the benefits, etc.
2. how can I encrypt the files & call from the CD for security reasons & for people who don't have the room on their HDD for the 700 MB of info?
2. Can anyone give name to a program that I can use (freely or paid) that will do these things for me?
The CD product concept:
The CD will have a broad range of topic specific(s) & information. People like my mother, who have no means of getting an ISP (long story), they could use this to access information on many topics. My on-line web site will have the order information & a sign-in to members only & hopefully a knowledge forum of sorts.
Forgive me for this long post & thanks to anyone who will bother to help me.

Well, I stopped reading half way through, but I'll give you a little info. The "active content" you referred to is not encryption, it is most likely JavaScript in the html pages. When you run an HTML file locally with JavaScript, it could contain malicious code that could cause proplems, hence the message. If you were to encrypt these pages, then the user would need to have the appropriate software installed in order to decrypt the pages on-the-fly. Then you start getting into licensing issues and other headaches.
Even so, trying to protect HTML pages is a losing proposition. If the user has access to the files, they can simply open them in notepage. If right-click is disabled, they can turn off JavaScript. At the very least they can take a screenshot and run it through OCR to convert it to text.

Yes. I keep my scripts & java prompted for that reason.
My question(s) had little to do with the text I highlighted & copy/pasted into MS Word & saved as .html.
I am trying desperately to get someone to give me some development advice.
I have Office XP Pro, with the above programs, and I am trying to figure out which direction to go as to formatting my product.
The product will be a global wealth of knowledge on many subjects. Here's mt dilemma:
1. I need to know how to put this together, and which programs to use.
2. Is there a way of writing some type of program that will call on encrypted files (showing up as web pages when viewed), and the files can be either installed in a local directory or the CD-Rom.
Please help me:)
Thanks!

I'm not sure where you're going with "encrypted" files. As I said, for the user to be able to view the files they would need to have software on their computer to decrypt them. Can you be more specific as to what you do not want the users to be able to do with your files? I think it's obvious you don't want them to edit them, but what else?
One option, depending upon your answer to the above, would be to convert the documents to PDF. With PDF there are many options for DRM (digital rights management). For instance you can prevent users from editing the documents or even printing them. PDFs support linking like HTML documents, plus you can have them open in a browser.

hmmm...
Well, ok. I see where you are going...
I was actually speaking of writing a program that would display the text info in some sort of browser (IE or any other or the program's "own" browser, keeping the files possibly as image or whatever...
I don't know. The more that I search for the answer, the more I realize it's of no use anyway.
I am going to write these pages, link them all together by hyperlinking subject specific words to a page where not only that word is defined, translated into several languages, but you will be able to link to other related articles & resources...
PDF is expensive, and I just don't have the extra money for a program that will create those docs. All I have to work with is Office XP Pro, which is pretty cool:)
Mainly, I guess what I was looking for was a convenient applet that would install on the HDD, place a shortcut on the Desktop & call on the files from CD.
I guess that I will make an Autorun.ini file & forget it for now. I can get that to open the .html home page...surfing from there to other pages...
The applet was going to be the Control Panel, and the files on the CD wold only open with that program, but there again, if it shows up as anything other than an image file with clickable links (still scan & copy vulnerable), then what's the use? The Applet would have to be it's own browser too...
Sorry for the confusion...I'm just working really hard & want my product to remain "mine".
Wish me luck, and if you think of anything else, please let me know, ok?
Thanks again:)

I KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR NOW!
Thanks. I have spent the past three days or so looking for not only the right program, but I have also realized exactly what I want.
I want, yes, a program that will open & give a choice of whther to install all files & folders on the HDD or simply view them from CD directory.
I liked the software recommended on my other post in Programming & have found a few more. After spending about 6 hours downloading java pages (tutorials), and only getting about less than half (whew!), it will take me months to learn all that. Sun Java is so cool though...
I can write HTML, and that's about it. There has to be an installer out there readily available for commercial use that provides this functionality.
I have had many game CDs in the past that popped up an installer & gave me the option to install all of the files locally or "play the game now."
I know how to make an autorun.inf & a .BAT file that will open my home page or main "engine" page, but that's about it too...
In the past few days, I have downloaded many, many pages on several languages. Now, it's almost time to begin learning each one...
If you know of a program like I am looking for, and yes, I would like to keep looking for security alternatives to the actual pages & will contact the sites in question, but please let me know...
Installer + Option to install (download)files (there will be six CDs in all, so I need something that will prompt for the next CD & so on...) or run them from CD.
Thanks again, Michael!

have you tried visual basic?
VB6 would allow you to create a program, and do what you asked with the install or read from cd,
Surprised no one mentioned it ,,

I got a copy,,, from a book (working model) of Visual Basic 6 in a learn to program book ,,, for the name of the book <<< If it'll help >>> I'll wait till you reply if ,, interested, You may also wish to try and sign up on Microsofts tech net site and register to get a copy ,,, (time limited ) version of Visual Studio 2005
Awesome program!!! A lot to learn about it myself,,, Many different tools involved there,,
Well good luck in your search.

Thank you! I have downloaded many pages on several languages including VBS, but I haven't slowed down enough to read any of it yet...I will though.
I am very interested in getting the option/choice to either install or keep all files on CD.
For now, I can hardly keep my head up - working alomost steadily around the clock as of late..wife is threatening me too...lol
Thanks again,
John:)Cisco
