msn/aol secure sites

afternoon, i now seem to be unable to reach certain "secure" sites, mainly aol.com and msn.com to read my (old) email on the internet and also im unable to login to msn. i have reinstalled IE6 and Msn and have checked all the security settings for internet explorer. when i try to login to msn i get "unable to sign you into .net serivice, possible due to a problem with your internet connection. 0x81000370" is this number significant?
also on almost all the windows, on them menu bar, the 'file'/'edit'/.....etc text is highlighted in white. this is not set in display options, i have both firewall software on the computer and the belkin router and i run adaware6 and spybotS&D reguarly and theyre fine.....
